Keeping life New and interesting

AKA: Bucket List

Every Week I plan to do something new and different. New experiences will help keep live new fresh and memorable. Our community is full of activities among our midst worth noting. I do not wish to be like the person who lived in New York all their lives and had not visited the World Trade Towers.

The day was hot, despite the sun not yet being high in the sky, as we met humans quite varied and from many walks of life. As per schedule we did not have long to wait till they trotted toward us with the riders from the last tour. Some of the mighty steads wore hoods. Were they members of a secrete society? I learned that the hoods were made of coarse mesh that allowed the horses to see their paths. These kept the horses calm and protected their eyes from mosquitoes and other flying insects.

To mount the horses we were provided stairs, for they were much taller than any member of our group . The horses stood perhaps greater than 15 hands high to their withers, The withers is the point on the horses back where the back meets the base of the neck. A hand begin equal to 4” therefore 4 inches multiplied by 15 hands is 60 inches or 5 feet. After mounting we proceeded single file towards the woods. The constant cover of tree tops created a cool environment upon this hot humid day. A mild cool breeze with the rhythmic of our mount swaying of resembled the the feel of our own gait quickly allowed us feel as one with our four legged friends. The silence was occasionally interrupted with a serenade of a sparrow or perhaps a finch . Our procession proceeded with an occasional delay for a horse to relieve themselves of seemingly gallons of fluid (their union tells me they are entitled to 15 min breaks).

There was little horsing about the steads knew jobs and their way very experienced with the trails. They allowed and responded well to slight variations ( deviating from the side of the tree with the most worn path) with a slight nearly an imperceptible nudge of the reigns.

The trip brought us closer to and allow us to relate to our childhood's memories of the thousands of media portrayals of the old west: IE... Wagon Train, Blazing Saddles, City Slickers, Horse Whisper, Allowing us to imagine that we rode with or were the Duke, The lone Ranger, or Clint Eastwood.

Ridding is a great shared experience. A moment for Family and friends, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, to get together, to bond, and a moment to do something different from our daily hectic grind where we work like a horse. .
